This June, Look a Little Closer with ScoliScreen
June is National Scoliosis Awareness Month, and at Bay Area Scoliosis Center in Alameda, we’re encouraging everyone to do something simple but powerful: pay closer attention to how the people we love are carrying themselves.
Scoliosis is often first noticed by a caring parent, friend, or partner — spotting an uneven shoulder, a tilted stance, or a subtle posture change. That moment of awareness, followed by action, can make all the difference.
This year’s theme: Notice. Check. Act.
What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a three-dimensional sideways curvature of the spine affecting about 3% of the population. It commonly appears during adolescence (especially during growth spurts) but can develop at any age. Many cases start without pain, making them easy to miss until the curve progresses.
Early detection opens the door to effective non-surgical options and better long-term outcomes.

What does “noticing” actually look like?
It takes just a few minutes of caring observation. Now that it is swimsuit season, we often see a lot of patients who present after a parent or loved one notices asymmetries while in bathing suits. Stand behind your child, sibling, friend, or partner while they’re relaxed and look for:
- Uneven shoulders (one higher than the other)
- A more prominent shoulder blade
- Uneven hips or waist creases
- Noticeable changes in posture over recent months
ScoliScreen is an online resource to help you check your loved ones at home. This free tool, developed by ScoliCare, makes it simple and convenient to assess possible signs of scoliosis from the comfort of your own home and offers guidance on next steps. It’s designed for educational purposes to support awareness and early detection.
